Porteus-v5.1-alpha4

Post#1 by ncmprhnsbl » 21 May 2026, 00:17

It's time for another development release: 5.1-alpha4, based on a snapshot of slackware current @2026-05-16

Download from your favourite mirror: http://porteus.org/porteus-mirrors.html (in the x86_64/Porteus-v5.1 folder)

If you're manually updating an existing install, the modules are in x86_64/Porteus-v5.1/modules and the kernel in x86_64/Porteus-v5.1/kernel.
Be sure to update the initrd.xz too, which can be found in the install-skeleton-64.tar.xz.

Note: some mirrors may not be fully synced at the time of posting.

To repeat:
At this point, while quite stable, there are only 64bit versions, no localization support, no bundles and limited package repos.
Who is this for? Anyone who wants to contribute to the further development of Porteus by bug testing/reporting/fixing
or those who need/want the latest software and don't mind the lack of package availability.

Changes:
  • kernel 7.0.9 (thanks to Blaze)
  • added "Module Maker" (gtk-slapt-mod) a gui frontend for slapt-mod package manager/module maker.(thanks to pterid)
  • added upgrade-mods, a terminal utility to upgrade a module previously created with slapt-mod.(thanks to pterid)
  • various fixes and additions to "Porteus Modules" (lsmodules) utility (notably integration with slapt-mod and upgrade-mods).(thanks to pterid)
  • added aufs-dir-tools: "A set of small Bash tools for managing files in the aufs union file system." for more info see here: aufs-dir-tools (thanks to pterid)
  • change to initrd so that changes= cheatcode can be used from porteus/porteus-v5.1-x86_64.cfg file.(thanks to pterid)
  • fall back to the gtkdialog version of make-changes dialog due to broken encrytpted savefile creation support in the python version.
  • 06-man.xzm for onboard man pages is now on the server
  • fastest-mirror should now filter out broken/non-existent mirrors
Thanks to all bug reporters and particularly pterid for quality reporting/patches and supplying new utilities.
As always thanks to Blaze and especially Hamza for supplying and maintaining our server.
