Configuration of .cfg file for savefile location rejected

Post#1 by meisthfox » 19 Nov 2025, 19:38

Hi, I have an older PC with 2 internal SSD drives : Drive1 contains C:Windows 10 & D:Data. Drive2 contains E:Ventoy & F:VentoyEFI. On drive 2E I have various Linux distro .iso files including Porteus-KDE-v5.1-alpha3-x86_64. So when I go to create a savefile, I can put that with the .iso files or on drive 1D. The problem is that the system won't allow me to configure and save the .cfg file to the chosen location. What to do ? (My skill level is intermediate) Thanx !

There are various ways to do this in Ventoy, usually with a custom json file you create.

I would suggest that you actually install Porteus to a usb thumb-drive. The simplest way to start is with a bog stock fat32 stick, and do the copy and bootloader install (if actually necessary if you are uefi - see the installation docs). There are laptop-sized conveniently small ones available.

In the meantime, you can always stop the boot countdown with either ESC or TAB, and manually enter your savefile location by using the arrow keys, and typing in your custom changes= parameters.
That's a UNIX book - cool. -Garth

What system, what error msg? It's possible Ventoy considers non-boot drives as write protected. How are you specifying the changes= parm? The location of your save.dat file is on a different drive than where the changes= parm is written. Need more error info.
